More than 3 million still without power after Ike
Those in the Midwest are expected to be reconnected within days, while many Texans will have to wait weeks, according to utility companies commanding armies of employees working around the clock. Customers in Ohio (1 million), Kentucky (356,000), Indiana (85,000), Pennsylvania (60,000) and New York (33,000) were without power on Tuesday morning, the DOE said.
Hurricane:
Violent storms with wind speeds in excess of 70 mph and heavy rains.
Prepare for evacuation:
1. Have a plan - this should include:
.. A. Where family and party members will meet.
. B. An escape route that includes an alternate course.
2. Gas - Traffic may be backed up for hours and buying fuel may not be an option.
3. Cash - Small bills are the best choice. Don't count on using plastic.
4. Medication - Have a 7 day supply in your evacuation kit.
5. Food and Water - this should include:
.. A. Baby food and formula - 3 day supply.
.. B. Water - 3 gallons per person will be a good 3 day supply.
.. C. 3 day supply of nonperishable food per person.
6. Emergency radio - Battery operated with fresh batteries.
7. First aid kit
8. Flashlight
9. Blankets and sleeping bags
Consider this:

Evacuation worked
but created a highway horror

If a successful emergency evacuation involves 100-mile highway backups, motorists running out of gas and water, widespread road rage and the death of 23 seniors in a freak bus accident, what would a failure look like?
Prepare your home:
Regular maintenance:
1. Remove all dead or dying trees and shrubs, they can damage property.
2. Regularly clean gutters so they work properly in heavy rain.
3. Install permanent shutters on windows and doors.
4. Cut back or remove any limbs touching the house.
5. Secure things that might blow away or store inside if possible.
